i like avast 4.0 home edition its free and very reliable
1) The best Anti-Virus protection holds in the hands of Kaspersky but this also slows down your computer. If you want one which is fast reliable and updates on it’s own then i suggest you try Nod32. Nod32 is the best product for maximum protection however you have to pay. But if you are one of those people who does not want to spend money you can get it free but i am not responsible for anything. 2) Free Anti-Virus products are reliable but it depends what ones you use. To me it seems Avast is the most reliable and trustworthy Anti-Virus product. Avast has lots of features and some you dont even get with the paid Anti-Virus programs. Like the P2P Shield which protects you against LimeWire etc. However with Avast you have to give them your email address for a license code for a year which is FREE. But this code only lasts for a year, when the year has ended you can re-register to get another code. You do this every year so it is completely FREE.

i suggest to go for norton the reason is that they give excellent service support and if the software blocks any of the application they support with remote assistance . which is very much effective .
i was using Kaspersky before norton i didn’t find any problems in that too.
There are a few choices when it comes to security, mainly in the AntiVirus department. Some very good, free anti-viruses available to download are:
1) AVG 8 AntiVirus. Easiest interface to use, very fast scanning and doesn’t lag your computer at all. Only has a 76% detection rate, but catches the most harmful of viruses. 2) Avast! 4 AntiVirus. Smaller, sleeker skin, average scanning speed, but reports alot of safe files as viruses, so you might need to watch out for that. 78% detection rate, but alot more complicated than most other free AVs. 3) Avira AntiVirus. Simple layout, which even the most basic of users can navigate. Incredibly fast scanning, with a 90% detection rate. Personally I use AVG, but only because I go for the easier interface. If you are paranoid about viruses then the only real option is Avira. But if you just want normal protection, then any of the three will do it for you.

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like McAfee and Norton (which only has an 18% detection rate!), and don’t use up as many resources.
Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

Free software are not reliable because they do not provide all the adequate facilities and are not safe to use specially on a laptop.
If you don’t mind paying, the best antivirus is Norton 360 from Symantec. However, Norton Antivirus is just as good, but it doesn’t have some of the features of 360. It’s also cheaper.
