I know of all the great antiviruses out there, but you can’t match active scanning. What is the best free antivirus that achieves this?

if i had to use a free one (which I dont) I would probably use Avira free edition. Avira’s not too bad for a freebie. I have it installed on my pc as a backup and currently disabled. But If I didn’t have a paid ffor program, I would probably go with this. Superantispyware isn’t too bad either. I use it stricly for it’s registry scanning abilities. SAS at least seems to scan the registry fairly decent.
I would refer to AVG 8.0 but after I have tested some Anti-Virus programs I have found that BitDefender would be one that I would chose over AVG. The reason being is that with the free version you get more than AVg and if you buy it you also get more stuff.
It all depends on you
Hope this help
Avira is a good free antivirus. It’s the full version (unlike AVG) and never expires (unlike Avast). I use it and it doesn’t use much system resources and it actively scans.
I prefer avast anti spyware as it has resident protection as well as a powerful boot time scan…and it’s free and plays nice with other programs like superantispyware….cheers
I have a list of free anti virus software on my blog along with other free programs to keep your computer clean (such as spyware removal)

AVG Free or AVG 8.0 Internet Security(better) but you have to buy the internet security one. http://www.avg.com
avg 8 free is the best, but don’e panic too much, I’ve been running vista on the net for 4 months with no anti virus and no firewall, no problems.
